I sculpted human mouths and fingers emerging from tableware. The blurred border between the living and the still in these works is intriguing.
In this combination of the still and the alive joined as one, I try to change the way in which we observe useful tableware. The useful, passive tableware can now be perceived as an active object, aware of itself and its surroundings — responding to it. It does not allow itself to be taken for granted, to be used. It decides on its own how to behave in the situation.
The Blurred Border Between the Living and the Still
The idea behind the doubtfully alive series: tableware that feels, reaches, and refuses to be used
Over the years, these series evolved in several distinct directions. In one, the sculptures transform into living things—wild, untamed, and evocative. The tea set, a symbol of civilized adult ritual, marches in a mad parade.
In the other, the relationships between the vessel-creature become increasingly physical. In "Embraced" (2016–2017), the “doubtfully alive” vessels interact through their bodies: they lean on one another, pinch, hug, and embrace, while their porcelain bodies visibly react to these encounters.
The latest development is the "Intimate Series", in which the “doubtfully alive” creatures become increasingly intimate. A striking contrast emerges between the elegant, respectable pieces and their intimate actions, openly displayed on the table for everyone to see.
